If you’ve been even a little bit curious about ayahuasca, you’ve probably heard a mix of inspiring stories and a few scary myths. So let’s start simple. Ayahuasca is a traditional plant medicine from the Amazon, used for generations in ceremony as a tool for healing, insight, and spiritual connection.

At Rythmia, ayahuasca is a core modality in The Rythmia Way, which is a structured program that blends plant medicine ceremonies with integration, yoga, breathwork, metaphysical teachings, and modern wellness practices. It’s what sets us apart from other healing centers. We believe wellness isn't just one night. It's the full arc of transformation — and the way you land afterward.

This article is here to clear the air. We’ll talk honestly about what ayahuasca is, what it isn’t, and how safety, preparation, and real support make all the difference in the experience.

Myth #1: Ayahuasca is a Drug

This one comes up all the time. From the outside, people hear “psychoactive” and immediately think “drug.” But ayahuasca doesn’t function like a recreational substance, and it hasn’t historically been used that way.

For centuries, indigenous tribes in the Amazon basin have worked with ayahuasca in ceremonial settings for healing, guidance, and spiritual connection. It’s taken with intention, under the care of trained facilitators or shamans, and within a container of prayer and ritual. That context is everything.

Drugs are addictive. The more you use them, the more your body builds tolerance and craves more. Ayahuasca is different. It’s not chemically addictive, and it doesn’t create a cycle of dependency. In fact, many people report the opposite. After a few ceremonies, they feel a sense of completion rather than craving. There’s no urge to use it casually or repeatedly for stimulation.

From a medical perspective, when someone is properly screened and cleared, which is a big part of the safety process at Rythmia, ayahuasca has shown promising results in helping people address trauma, depression, and addiction patterns. Research and clinical insights suggest it supports neuroplasticity and deep psychological processing.

When used with structure and medical oversight, this sacred plant medicine is about healing instead of escaping.

Myth #2: Ayahuasca is Dangerous

There is a common misconception that ayahuasca is inherently dangerous. While anything that shifts your consciousness should be taken seriously, there’s a great deal of nuance that should also be applied when navigating some of the valid considerations when taking ayahuasca.

While ayahuasca carries real risks in unsupported settings or for those with certain medical contraindications, the plant medicine itself isn't inherently dangerous. The primary concerns, as Dr. Jeff explains in his medical safety breakdown, are contraindications. Certain medications, especially SSRIs, specific psychiatric diagnoses, and some cardiovascular conditions can create complications. That’s why screening is non-negotiable.

When those factors are properly evaluated and ruled out, the safety profile changes dramatically. It becomes about responsible medical oversight and structured care.

At Rythmia, that structure is built in. Every guest completes a thorough medical screening before they ever step into ceremony. There is a fully staffed, 24/7 on-site medical clinic with licensed professionals. Doses are measured, facilitators are trained, and the environment is controlled and supported.

Not all ayahuasca retreats operate this way. In fact, Rythmia is the only medically licensed plant medicine center in the world. And here’s the important part: in a properly held setting, it’s not just that ayahuasca becomes “not dangerous,” it's that it becomes profoundly healing.

Many guests report lasting emotional shifts. Imagine a deep reconnection to yourself that lasts for a lifetime. That kind of result doesn’t happen by accident — in fact, it only happens when safety and structure are taken seriously.

Myth #3: Ayahuasca Will Instantly Fix Everything

This is the flip side of the fear-based myths. Some people swing the other way and think one ceremony will magically fix everything, as if life will be completely reset by Monday morning.

Ayahuasca can absolutely create profound breakthroughs. It can show you the root of a pattern, help you feel something you’ve been avoiding for years, or reconnect you to parts of yourself you thought were lost. But insight isn’t the same thing as holistic integration.

We’re very clear about this: the real work continues after you leave the center and return to your actual life. Ceremony can open the door. Integration is what helps you walk through it.

That’s one of the reasons why The Rythmia Way is a comprehensive program that combines ancient ceremonial practices with modern therapeutic tools, breathwork, yoga, metaphysical teachings, group integration, and ongoing support. Guests receive access to the RLife app, which was designed specifically to support preparation and post-retreat integration.

When people commit to that full arc — preparation, ceremony, integration — the results will stick and change lives. At Rythmia, of our guests self-report receiving a miracle by the end of the week. But even then, it’s not about being “cured,” it’s about having the awareness and tools to continue healing long after you go home.

Myth #4: Ayahuasca Will Make You Lose Control

This is one of the biggest fears people have.

There is a common assumption that once you drink ayahuasca, you are no longer in control of your body, or lose awareness of what’s happening. In reality, that’s not how most people experience it.

Dr. Jeff often describes the state as being similar to lucid dreaming. You’re in an altered state of consciousness, but you’re still aware. You can think, observe, and make choices. You can sit up, lie down, speak to a facilitator, or ask for support. It’s immersive and sometimes intense, but it’s not the same as being unconscious or totally disconnected from your body.

It’s important to note that the environment plays a huge role in how safe that feels.

Since the plant medicine ceremonies at Rythmia are carefully supported, there’s a minimum ratio of one healer for every four guests, so personalized support is always available. Across the resort, there are two staff members for every guest, including experienced shamans, facilitators, and medical professionals. To date, individual plant medicine ceremonies have been safely conducted at our center.

To further ensure guest safety, we have a 24/7 on-site medical clinic staffed by licensed doctors and nurses who monitor each guest throughout the week.

All these considerations combine to give you an experience that allows you to safely explore your inner world with guidance and support the entire way.

Myth #5: Everyone Has the Same Ayahuasca Experience

This might surprise people, but there isn’t one “standard” ayahuasca experience. Every ceremony is different.

Some people have vivid visions, while others don’t see much at all. Some feel everything in their body. Others receive insight more like a conversation. It’s deeply personal.

Traditionally, there are a few broad categories people describe:

There’s Pinta, which is the visionary state. Bright colors, geometric patterns, symbols, sometimes even strange words or languages. It can feel like stepping into another realm. For many, this experience helps them understand how powerful the mind is in shaping reality.

There’s Consult, where insight comes through direct knowing or even an internal dialogue. People often describe receiving clear answers to personal questions, almost like a consultation with a wiser part of themselves.

There’s Body, which is exactly what it sounds like. Physical sensations, warmth, tingling, yawning, deep breathing, sometimes purging. While it may seem random, it’s really the body releasing stored emotion or trauma.

And then there’s Nada, which can be misunderstood. Sometimes nothing dramatic seems to happen. But that doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Healing can occur at a subconscious level, working quietly beneath awareness.

So while these are the ways we categorize various experiences, it’s important to know that we’ll also teach you how to work with these experiences.

Throughout the week, plant medicine workshops help guests understand the different journeys and how to navigate them thoughtfully. That education is part of why the program is so effective.

Because the truth is, just as we all have one-of-a-kind personalities and lives, so too does the experience manifest itself differently for each of us.

Myth #6: Ayahuasca is Illegal Everywhere

A lot of people assume ayahuasca is banned across the board. The reality is more nuanced than that.

Laws around ayahuasca vary by country. In some places it’s restricted. In others, particularly where it has traditional or religious roots, it exists in a legal gray area. And in certain countries, it can be administered legally within specific regulatory frameworks — and Costa Rica is one such place.

Rythmia is based in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and operates legally there. In fact, it is the world’s only medically licensed plant medicine center. That distinction matters. It means there is formal oversight and regulatory compliance, which requires Rythmia to operate transparently rather than underground.

For someone researching an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica, this is important. You’re not traveling somewhere secretive or informal. You’re entering a center that has been operating openly and consistently since 2016, with established medical protocols, trained staff, and thousands of guests having passed through its program.

The legal landscape around plant medicine can feel confusing, but it isn’t accurate to say ayahuasca is illegal everywhere. In the right country, within the right structure, and with proper licensing, it can be served responsibly and lawfully.

Myth #7: You Have to Go to the Jungle for Ayahuasca

There’s this image people have that if you want to work with ayahuasca, you have to disappear into the Amazon and swat away mosquitos to arrive at your epiphany.

And while that’s true for some places, it’s not the only option.

If you’re researching an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica, you’ll find that accessibility can look very different. Rythmia is located in Guanacaste, about an hour from Liberia International Airport, and guests can be transported directly via shuttle. No trekking through remote terrain. It’s simple and straightforward.

The center is located in Hacienda Pinilla, within one of the world’s Blue Zones. A Blue Zone is a region where people statistically live longer, healthier lives due to lifestyle factors like community, whole foods, movement, and connection to nature. There are only a handful of Blue Zones in the world, and this part of Costa Rica is one of them.

So yes, you’re surrounded by natural beauty and ocean air, near three of the country’s top beaches. But you’re also in a setting designed for comfort.

The 7-day Rythmia Way program is all-inclusive. Accommodations, nourishing meals, daily classes, workshops, yoga, breathwork, integration, and ceremonies are all built in. You don’t have to go deep into the jungle to go deep within yourself.

Myth #8: You Need to be Spiritual for Ayahuasca

A lot of people assume you need to be deeply spiritual to even consider ayahuasca.

At Rythmia, we see people come from all over the world and from every walk of life. Some arrive skeptical or uncertain; others have already sat in ceremony.

Internally, many guests are working through depression or unresolved trauma, or report feeling stuck, like they’ve hit a roadblock and can’t see the next step forward. They may be outwardly successful in their career, but inwardly disconnected. Others are looking for forgiveness, closure, or a deeper understanding of their life’s direction.

What they all have in common is a desire for change.

The ceremonies themselves don’t require a belief system. You don’t have to subscribe to any particular philosophy. The Rythmia Way blends ancient ceremonial practices with modern therapeutic tools, which means the experience can meet you wherever you are in your life at that moment.

So long as you are willing to look inward, this experience is for you.

Myth #9: Preparation for an Ayahuasca Ceremony Doesn’t Matter

Preparation for an ayahuasca ceremony isn’t optional — it’s a core part of the work.

At Rythmia, the process begins before you arrive in Costa Rica. Through the RLife app, guests move through a structured preparation module that includes dietary guidelines, educational resources, and weekly live calls where you can connect directly with Dr. Jeff, the Chief Medical Officer at Rythmia. You’re able to ask questions, share what’s coming up for you, and hear from instructors who’ve guided thousands of guests before you. There is also the option for personalized 1:1 coaching if you want deeper support.

Once on-site, the preparation continues. There are plant medicine workshops throughout the week that teach you how to work with ayahuasca, navigate intense moments, breathe through resistance, and stay anchored during the experience. Daily yoga and breathwork help regulate the nervous system and get energy moving. Hydrocolonic cleanses with mineral-rich salts are included to help the body release stagnation. The meals are organic and clean, designed to support your system while it adapts to change.

And then there’s intention.

Meaningful intention-setting is central to the experience. Guests are guided to reflect deeply, through journaling, walking the labyrinth, sitting quietly before ceremonies, and asking themselves what they’re truly ready to face or release. While personal intentions vary, three core intentions frame the ceremonies:

Show me who I’ve become.
Merge me back with my soul at all costs.
Heal my heart.

These are anchors that create focus without forcing an outcome.

Ayahuasca meets you where you are and brings what you need rather than what you expect.

Preparation shapes that encounter. It gives you tools to return to when things feel intense. It grounds the experience in sincerity rather than curiosity alone.

Myth #10: You Should Expect a Big Purge During an Ayahuasca Ceremony

A lot of people hear about ayahuasca and immediately picture one thing: throwing up.

And yes, purging can happen. But it’s not something you’re required to go through, and it’s not the whole story.

Dr. Jeff explains that about half of guests will throw up at least once during their time in ceremony. But what’s important is understanding why that can happen. He describes it as a psychosomatic release, essentially meaning the body is releasing stored emotional material. If you’ve spent years holding in anxiety, grief, or stress, that tension doesn’t just disappear. It lives in the body. Ayahuasca facilitates the release of stored emotional tension, and purging is one way the body responds.

It’s crucial to note that purging isn’t only vomiting. It can also look like sweating, shaking, yawning, crying, deep sighing, stretching, or even laughing! All of those are forms of release.

And just as importantly, some people don’t purge physically at all.

Purging isn’t something to fear or force. It’s simply one of the ways the body and mind may choose to let go, if that’s what’s needed.
